Three Twelve Step Success Stories

All areas of my life, physical, mental, emotional, are drastically improved. Sobriety means being present in my life and the lives of those that I love and care about. It means a relationship with my higher power that has become the most important relationship that I have.

I know now that it was the light inside of them – the sunlight of the spirit – that spoke to me. One of addiction’s stereotypes is that it only affects those with dysfunctional families or a history of abuse. But when we spoke with Jules, we learned her story defied those ideas conclusively. Like too many people, substance use disorder had taken over Gina’s life – that is, until one day when she found the inner strength to ask for help. Behind substance use disorder is people – people with real stories of struggle and triumph. Resultantly, Bill learned to love himself and to love life.

In the summer of 2014, my boyfriend gave me an ultimatum; either I stop drinking or he would take my son and I could leave. I woke up on August 10, 2014, and went to a treatment center for an intake appointment.

But after my implant my life has changed. Within 3 months I was promoted from boilermaker to technical manager and have my own house. I have my family back and I have my life back. My boss sees so much potential in me he wants to send me for further studies. I thank you so much for your contribution.

Quitting drinking and using was one thing. Looking back, this is the first proof that I’d really changed. Unlike countless times before when I had gritted my teeth, determined to solve all of my problems myself, this time I asked for help.

Their facilities are amazing, the amount of work and money the owner puts into his properties is unmatched. The programs they have are also the best. House managers are also super involved, go to the same meetings and know what is going on with the clients. Today, he’s two years sober, happily diving out of planes, and an active member in our recovery community.

The most surprising thing to me was that you can have fun without alcohol and drugs. It’s a different kind of fun and much better. That I don’t need to use substances to have fun.

When we were finally married, she gradually accepted my use of marijuana and alcohol as normal, even participating at times. Soon we found couples who had the same interest. There were many times after getting together with another couple that I drove home in a blackout. Often, we hear the stories of people with addiction being redeemed by their children — but this is not that kind of story, which is precisely why we love it. When I say we were inseparable, I mean it. That same year I also dealt with the loss of my best friend and his dad due to a carbon monoxide leak in their house. Dan was often victim to his dad’s violent outbursts, per the episode summary. He was desperate to mend their relationship. However, when Dan was 28, his father died in an accident. The heartbroken son followed in his dad’s footsteps and started drinking.

I wasn’t sponsoring anybody; wasn’t helping anybody. Jules’ recovery has been as much about finding herself and living her truth but rather about reclaiming her life from alcoholism. Now with a new life, she has her confidence back. “My therapist introduced me to my first sponsor who sent me to my first 12 step meeting. There was something about the people there that I couldn’t put my finger on that kept me going.

I’m inspired to do so many positive things. I would love to build a sober house and really involve myself with service work. The disease of addiction began to manifest itself in my life long before I ever picked up a drink or a drug.

In hindsight, it is clear to me that many of my childhood behaviors and ways of thinking were paving the way to a self-destructive lifestyle that would eventually become unmanageable. My drug of choice has always been “more”. If it was something that made me feel good, I was never able to enjoy it in “moderation”. I was the kid that ate all of his Halloween candy within a couple of days, while my brother and sister made it last for months. I would spend my allowance almost immediately on frivolous things, while my friends and siblings saved theirs and put it toward something meaningful.
